[Community Report]

The United Block Association at 113 Ave, St. Albans, is a recipient of a 2016 Citizens Committee Neighborhood Grant for $1,500.

The President, Dr. Rupert Green, formed the association seven years ago. The organization has conducted educational projects in addition to events that increases interaction and unites the community, including block parties.

The winning grant was based on the Association’s proposal to use the back yards of community members to plant fruits and vegetables to donate to nursing homes, senior citizens and other community members, and to eat at their upcoming block party. The project helps educate the youth about growing healthy food, allows senior citizens to share their experience with them, and promotes good citizenship.

The association has secured four back yards and could use some more. If you (a) have an available back yard, (b) want information on the August block party, or (c) want information on organizing your community, please call Dr. Green at 917 601 6425.
