Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II

VOTING RIGHTS AND SOCIAL JUSTICE CRUSADER RESPONSIBLE FOR IGNITING “MORAL MONDAY” MOVEMENT, THE REV. DR. WILLIAM J. BARBER II, TO PREACH AT THE RIVERSIDE CHURCH DURING PALM SUNDAY SERVICE

Service at Start of Holy Week, Features Heavenly Music and Blessing of the Palms

Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, president of the North Carolina NAACP and the catalyzing force behind the “Moral Monday” civil disobedience protests responding to voter suppression efforts in North Carolina, will preach during Palm Sunday service on April 13 at 10:45 a.m. in the Nave of The Riverside Church, 490 Riverside Drive (bet. 120th & 122nd Sts.), Morningside Heights.

Rev. Barber’s sermon will urge listeners to be moral witnesses to Justice, Mercy and Faithfulness.  Additionally, the 1,600 members of Riverside Church will participate in the blessing of palms and be treated to heavenly music sung by the Riverside Choir.  Following the service, Rev. Barber will lead a talk-back session discussing his sermon and various issues plaguing the country and its communities.

In opposition to regressive policies pushed by North Carolina’s governor and state legislature, including draconian cuts to Medicaid, unemployment benefits, and public education funding, Dr. Barber mobilized the Forward Together Moral Monday Movement.  This multi-racial, multi-generational grassroots movement inspired thousands for civil disobedience protests at the NC General Assembly the people’s house and around the state — and this year have spread to Georgia and South Carolina.

The Riverside Church (www.theriversidechurchny.org) is an interdenominational and international church built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. in 1927.  The 1,600-member Riverside Church in Morningside Heights has a rich tradition of providing a forum for important civic and spiritual leaders. Past speakers include: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., President William J. Clinton, the Dalai Lama, Fidel Castro, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela.
